Description

The Mt. Tilicho Expedition is a thrilling high-altitude adventure designed for seasoned mountaineers looking to summit one of the highest peaks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Standing at 7,134 meters (23,406 feet), Tilicho offers a challenging yet rewarding climb, with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. The expedition takes you through remote and picturesque landscapes, allowing you to experience the culture of the local people and the natural beauty of the region.

Starting in Kathmandu, the journey progresses through scenic drives to Besisahar and Koto, the gateway to the Nar-Phu Valley, before entering the high-altitude terrain. The trek involves ascending through traditional villages, alpine meadows, and rugged landscapes, with acclimatization days built in to help you adjust to the high altitude. After reaching Tilicho Base Camp, climbers will spend several days at higher camps to prepare for the summit push, navigating glaciers and technical snow and ice sections.

The entire expedition is carefully structured to ensure proper acclimatization, safety, and logistical support, with experienced Sherpa guides, support staff, and professional cooks accompanying the group. The expedition includes full accommodation, permits, climbing gear, and communication equipment for the ascent, as well as emergency provisions such as oxygen cylinders.

Once the summit is reached, climbers will descend via the same route, making their way back to Besisahar and eventually returning to Kathmandu. The journey also includes a cultural experience in the form of a farewell dinner and exploration of Kathmandu’s historical landmarks.

This expedition is ideal for those seeking an immersive and challenging climbing experience in one of Nepal’s most remote and breathtaking regions.

Safety & Acclimatization:

  • The itinerary includes a gradual ascent with multiple acclimatization days to minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

  • Oxygen cylinders, medical kits, and a satellite phone will be available in case of emergencies.

  • A Government Liaison Officer will be present to oversee safety and coordination of the expedition.

Physical Fitness:

  • This is a demanding climb, requiring excellent physical fitness and stamina.

  • Climbers should focus on cardiovascular endurance, strength training, and technical climbing practice.

Itineraries

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative will receive you and transfer you to your hotel in the city. After check-in, you’ll have time to rest or explore the nearby streets of Thamel. Later, you will meet the expedition team for an introductory briefing. This is a good opportunity to ask questions and go over logistics. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Today is reserved for expedition preparation, including finalizing permits and climbing documentation. You’ll also have time for last-minute shopping or equipment rental. A detailed expedition briefing will be given by your climbing leader. The day ends with gear checks and team coordination. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.

Leave Kathmandu after breakfast for a scenic drive along the Prithvi Highway. The road traces the Trishuli and Marshyangdi rivers, offering stunning countryside views. En route, you’ll pass terraced fields and small villages. Arrive in Besisahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region. Overnight at a local lodge.7 hours

Transfer to a jeep for the off-road journey to Chame along a narrow, winding mountain trail. The road hugs the Marsyangdi River, passing beautiful waterfalls and cliffs. The altitude rises quickly as pine forests become more prominent. Chame is the administrative center of the Manang District. Overnight in a lodge.5–6 hours

Begin your trek through alpine forests, crossing several suspension bridges. The trail offers spectacular views of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II. As you gain altitude, the scenery changes to dry, rocky hills. Pisang village rests in a high valley with dramatic vistas. Overnight in a lodge.5 hours

Continue through arid, windy terrain with striking Himalayan views. Choose the upper trail for better panoramas of Annapurna III and Gangapurna. Stop at traditional villages like Ghyaru and Ngawal en route. Reach Manang, a lively trading village with bakeries and tea houses. Overnight in a lodge. 6 hours

Spend the day exploring and acclimatizing to the thinner air. Take a side hike to Gangapurna Lake or the viewpoint above the village. You can also visit the local monastery or the Himalayan Rescue Association center. The aim is to rest while helping your body adjust. Overnight in a lodge.

Leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail and head west towards Khangsar. The trail passes through juniper groves and yak pastures, offering a more remote feel. Enjoy views of Tilicho Peak and other snowy giants. Khangsar is a small settlement with ancient stone houses. Overnight in a lodge. 6 hours

Follow a rugged path above a deep gorge and continue towards Besi Khola. This section is more isolated, with fewer trekkers and a wild alpine atmosphere. Cross landslides and glacial outwash areas. The river roars below as you arrive at your camp. Overnight in a basic lodge or tent.5–6 hours

Continue on a narrow, steep trail that skirts rock walls and snowy ridges. The views of the high Himalayas intensify as you approach Base Camp. You may see blue sheep or snowcocks along the way. Base Camp sits below Tilicho Peak, surrounded by glaciers. Overnight in a tented camp.4–5 hours

Spend 15 days in the climbing zone, establishing Camp I, II, and summit camp. Acclimatization and route-fixing are crucial due to altitude and technical difficulty. The ascent involves snowfields, steep ridgelines, and ice-covered slopes. Summit attempts depend on weather and team readiness. All nights at tented camps above Base Camp.

After a successful climb, pack down Base Camp and remove all waste. Retrace your steps through the valley and descend back to Khangsar. The downhill trail feels easier but remains scenic and dramatic. Celebrate with a warm meal and rest in a proper lodge. Overnight in Khangsar. 5 hours

Climb back up to join the main Annapurna Circuit trail and continue towards Thorong High Camp. Cross alpine meadows and glacier-fed streams. The thin air makes the trek slow but rewarding. Reach High Camp, situated below Thorong La Pass. Overnight in a lodge or high camp hut.6–7 hour

Descend sharply on the other side into the Mustang region. Reach the sacred site of Muktinath by late afternoon. Overnight in a lodge.7 hours

Travel by jeep down the Kali Gandaki Valley, the deepest gorge on earth. Pass through arid landscapes dotted with Tibetan-influenced villages. Arrive in the bustling town of Jomsom, known for its apple orchards and windy afternoons. Relax and enjoy the comforts of the lodge. Overnight in Jomsom.2 hours

Take an early morning flight over the mountains from Jomsom to Pokhara. After a short break or meal in Pokhara, board a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel for a well-deserved rest. The evening is free for shopping or dining out. Overnight in Kathmandu.
