Nepal Tourist Visa Guide

Entering Nepal is generally straightforward, and the visa system is designed to accommodate travelers, trekkers, and tourists with minimal difficulty. Most international visitors enter Nepal through Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, where a tourist visa on arrival is available for eligible nationalities. The same facility is also provided at several official land border entry points.

While the process is simple, queues can be long during peak travel and trekking seasons, especially in spring and autumn. Travelers who prefer to avoid waiting can apply for a visa in advance at a Nepalese embassy or consulate abroad. Visas issued outside Nepal must be used within six months of approval, and the visa validity begins only on the day you enter the country.

Visa on Arrival: What You Should Know

The visa issued at the airport or land borders is always a tourist visa. It allows multiple entries and is suitable for activities such as trekking, sightseeing, cultural tours, and visiting friends or family. If your purpose of stay changes during your visit, such as taking up employment, volunteering, or long-term residence, you must apply for a visa category change through the Department of Immigration in Nepal.

However, not all travelers are eligible for a visa on arrival. Nationals of certain countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and Liberia, must obtain a visa in advance from a Nepalese diplomatic mission abroad. These travelers will not be granted a visa at the airport or land border.

Step-by-Step Visa Application Process

The tourist visa process in Nepal involves three main steps.

First, complete the arrival card and the tourist visa application form. This can be done online through the official Nepal Immigration website or at self-service kiosks located inside Tribhuvan International Airport. If you complete the form online, print the confirmation page with the barcode and carry it with you. This confirmation is valid for 15 days from the date of submission.

Second, pay the visa fee based on your intended length of stay:

  1. 15 days: USD 30
  2. 30 days: USD 50
  3. 90 days: USD 125 Payments are accepted in several forms, but carrying cash in US dollars is strongly recommended, especially at land borders or during busy travel periods.

Third, proceed to the immigration counter with your passport, payment receipt, and completed application. After verification, the immigration officer will issue your visa.

Visa Extension Information

If you plan to stay longer than your initial visa allows, tourist visas can be extended at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or the Immigration Office in Pokhara.

The minimum extension period is 15 days at a cost of USD 45, with each additional day charged at USD 3. Late applications are subject to a fine of USD 5 per day, applicable for delays of up to 150 days. Travelers are advised to extend their visa before it expires to avoid penalties and travel complications.
