Description

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a classic and rewarding short trek nestled in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It offers an accessible Himalayan experience that combines stunning mountain vistas, rich cultural encounters, and varied natural landscapes, all within just five days. This trek is famous for its early morning ascent to Poon Hill, a renowned viewpoint at 3,193 meters that provides one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan giants, including Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Manaslu.

Starting from the picturesque village of Bandipur, the trek gently ascends through lush subtropical forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional Gurung and Magar villages. Along the way, trekkers pass through rhododendron-filled hillsides that burst into vibrant colors during spring, making the journey especially beautiful during March to May. The route takes you through welcoming tea-houses that offer warm hospitality, local cuisine, and a chance to connect with the culture and lifestyle of the hill communities.

The trek’s moderate elevation means it is accessible to beginners, families, and those with limited time, while still delivering a genuine sense of adventure. Besides the spectacular mountain views, trekkers will enjoy the tranquility of forest trails, charming villages like Ghandruk, and the chance to witness traditional Nepali rural life. The final day offers a smooth descent to Pokhara, a lakeside city known for its serene beauty and stunning views of the Annapurna range.

Overall, the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is an ideal introduction to trekking in Nepal, blending natural beauty, cultural richness, and manageable trekking days, making it one of the most popular and rewarding short treks in the Himalayas.

Itineraries

We take a short 25-minute morning flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, enjoying scenic views of the Himalayas en route. Upon arrival, we drive eastward through rolling hills, riverside towns, and terraced valleys toward Hile. The drive takes about 8–9 hours, offering a mix of natural beauty and glimpses of rural Nepali life. By evening, we reach the peaceful hill town of Hile, where we rest for the night.

Today’s trek is a steady uphill climb, primarily through thick forests and traditional stone staircases. You'll pass through Ulleri (a Magar village known for its iconic 3,000+ stone steps), and continue through rhododendron and oak forests. As you ascend, the air gets cooler, and by the time you reach Ghorepani, you'll feel the refreshing mountain breeze and get your first glimpse of distant snowy peaks

Start early (pre-dawn) with a short hike up to Poon Hill, a famous viewpoint offering one of the best panoramic Himalayan sunrises. The golden hues on Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre are unforgettable. After returning for breakfast in Ghorepani, trek towards Tadapani through beautiful forest trails with occasional ridge-line views. This section of trail is known for its rich biodiversity and tranquil woodland atmosphere.

Descend through forests and terraced fields to reach Ghandruk, a picturesque Gurung village. Ghandruk is culturally rich with well-preserved traditions and architecture. You can explore the Gurung Museum, observe daily village life, and enjoy magnificent views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli from your lodge.

A relatively gentle and enjoyable trek takes you from Ghandruk across stone paths and suspension bridges. You’ll descend to the Modi Khola, then gradually climb to Landruk, another Gurung village. From there, the trail ascends gently through forests to reach Tolkha, a peaceful village perched on the hillside.

The final day begins with a descent through forested paths to Pothana and Dhampus, followed by a steeper descent to Phedi. From here, a short 30-minute drive brings you to Pokhara, where your trek concludes. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel and have time to relax by Phewa Lake, reflecting on the journey just completed.
